Volunteers play a critical role in delivering these experiences; community members, educators, and business partners help prepare students for financial decisions ahead.

The facility, located at 2000 Wilkes Ridge Drive just west of Short Pump in West Creek, provides care for individuals who are recovering from a variety of illnesses or injuries, including strokes, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and limb loss, as well as those in need of general rehabilitation for various diseases and disorders.

“In the five and a half years that we have been open, we have served approximately 13,000 patients from 28 states. This illustrates the substantial need for the specialized and high-quality physical rehabilitation services that our team provides,” said Alan Lombardo, CEO of Sheltering Arms Institute. “Our goal with this expansion is to further enhance access to this care that helps people achieve their most complete recovery and get back to living a life beyond limits.”

The 30 new patient rooms are located on the fourth floor of the hospital, which previously existed as shell space that was constructed as part of the 212,000-square-foot hospital in anticipation of future need. The new unit will also be used to provide rehabilitative care and will serve as the new home of the Institute’s spinal cord injury unit, the Dallas Disbro Ability Center.

The new unit features:

• All-private rooms with en-suite bathrooms, large picture windows, and flat-screen TVs appointed with the GetWell Network that empowers patients to direct their own rehabilitation care
• The MyLife Room assistive technology lab
• A satellite gym equipped with advanced rehab technology and an on-unit bodyweight-support system
• In-room Alexa voice assistive technology
• A community room for shared dining, educational and support groups, and more
• Conference and office spaces

The $25 million project was funded through a combination of bank financing and equity contributions from joint venture members Sheltering Arms and VCU Health. The Institute received approval from the Virginia Department of Health to expand in October 2023 following a certificate of public need (COPN) application process. Construction began in late 2024 and was completed under general contractor Barton Malow, architecture firm HDR, and project management and design firm JLL.

The updated brand identity builds on the acquisition of Colonial Downs Racetrack by industry leader Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI) in late 2022. Since then, CDI has invested millions of dollars to elevate Colonial Downs into a premier racing venue and to reinvent the guest experience as a social entertainment destination for all ages, delivering higher-profile races, increased purses, expanded race days with enhanced weekend offerings, special programming for families, upgraded grandstand guest amenities, and significant facility enhancements for racing stakeholders.

The 2026 race season at Colonial Downs in New Kent County will be the biggest year of racing in Virginia’s history. The track will host a record 48 days of live racing including the prestigious Virginia Derby—the Commonwealth’s only Kentucky Derby qualifying race—on March 14, 2026.

With a total cost of $30 million, the Brown’s Island Improvement Project is a comprehensive plan to transform every part of the island—adding critical infrastructure such as potable water, restrooms, ADA-accessible entrances and pathways, and engaging elements such as a splash pad, river terraces, shade trees and seating, among other improvements, that will create fresh opportunities for recreation, entertainment and environmental sustainability. Annually, Brown’s Island welcomes more than one million visitors to experience all the island has to offer. 

The City of Richmond has committed $15 million to the project, and Venture Richmond is raising the additional $15 million through private sector and philanthropic funding. Fundraising is still underway, with 16% of the total $30 million remaining to raise from the community. CoStar has pledged the largest private contribution to the project. In addition to CoStar’s gift, Venture Richmond announced significant seven-figure gifts from The Community Foundation for a greater Richmond, Dominion Energy, and NewMarket Corporation. Additionally, $250,000 gifts have been provided by McGuireWoods, and TowneBank, along with a half-million-dollar challenge grant by the Mary Morton Parsons Foundation.

“The Brown’s Island Improvement Project has been a long time coming, and we could not be more excited to embark on this development,” Richmond Mayor Danny Avula said. “The events and attractions that take place on Brown’s Island are a major economic driver for the City, which is why this project is a wise investment and has the full support of the City of Richmond. This team dreamed a new future for Brown’s Island, and together we are making that happen for Richmonders and visitors to enjoy for years to come.”

Planning for the project began in 2018, and it received conceptual approval from the City Planning Commission in late 2019. The City Urban Design Committee and Planning Commission unanimously approved the final plans earlier this year. The City of Richmond kickstarted the fundraising with its $15 million commitment to the project.

“The Brown’s Island Improvement Project will lead to a world-class riverfront park and show us all how transformative public-private partnerships can be,” said Farhad Aghdami, board chair of Venture Richmond. “This project is the embodiment of Venture Richmond’s role in our community, which is to help enhance the vitality of our community. We’re so proud of this project and are grateful for the donors who have contributed over $25 million thus far. We truly look forward to the day when Richmond sets foot on the new Brown’s Island.” 

With construction underway, Brown’s Island will remain closed until October 2026 with plans to reopen in time for the 2026 Richmond Folk Festival. Dominion Energy Riverrock will take place along the Riverfront May 15-17, 2026, but will not utilize Brown’s Island. The T. Tyler Potterfield Memorial Bridge generally will remain open throughout construction and accessible from Tredegar Street via the western end of Brown’s Island. Friday Cheers will take a hiatus in 2026 and return to the island in 2027. 

The Brown’s Island Improvement Project will cap a series of remarkable Downtown riverfront developments, including the Allianz Amphitheater at Riverfront and CoStar Group’s half-billion-dollar investment in its new research headquarters, which will include several new restaurants on Tredegar Street.

Thursday will be a Showcase Day for horses in the national “Claiming Crown” competition featuring the horses that are the real heart and soul of the sport competing for a spot in November’s Claiming Crown Championship at Churchill Downs Racetrack.

The day’s notable entrants include 2024 Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan making his turf debut with jockey Brian Hernandez, Jr., 2023 Virginia Derby winner Integration, Irish import Cairo making his American debut, and 2025 Kentucky Derby winning jockey Junior Alvarado riding in both the Arlington Million and Secretariat Stakes.

Over the years, it has grown to be one of the Mid-Atlantic’s largest street festivals. Each year thousands visit historic Jackson Ward to reminisce about the days when 2nd Street was the heart and soul of Richmond’s African American community and was known as “the Harlem of the South.” Today, Jackson Ward continues to be a thriving neighborhood and community. 

The 2nd Street Festival is an annual celebration over two days that features three stages of live music and entertainment along with a Kidz Zone, popular food vendors, a marketplace and Artists Row to shop, and the Richmond Metropolitan Antique Car Club.

“It’s time to bring Go-Go energy back to Downtown Richmond,” said Sharon Bassard, Events and Booking Manager at Venture Richmond. “Welcoming The Chuck Brown Band to the 2^nd Street Festival is a powerful full circle moment for us. Chuck Brown, the Godfather of Go-Go, graced us with his talent at our 10th anniversary festival, and now we get to celebrate the legendary music with his son at our 37th festival this year!” 

This year’s festival features headliner The Chuck Brown Band on Saturday, October 4, DJ Drake and MC Choco on Sunday, October 5 and many other talented artists showcased over the two-day event.

Saturday’s Headliner, The Chuck Brown Band

The Chuck Brown Band is the official band of the late Chuck Brown, “The Godfather of Go-Go,” and the founder and creator Go-Go music, a hypnotically danceable genre deeply rooted in funk and soul that Brown developed in the early 1970’s in the District of Columbia.

Today, Chuck Brown’s son Wiley Brown (Wiley B), who has been around music since the age of four with his father, is the lead singer of the band. He started rapping as a youth but after Chuck’s passing, joined the Chuck Brown Band. Wiley B’s lead vocals and looks on the 2021 single and video “Summertime” by the Chuck Brown Band sparked even more comparisons amongst Go-Go fans to his father. Out now is their 2024 single, “Loose Control,” featuring Treasure Joy.

Sunday’s Closing Performance, DJ Drake and MC Choco

Since 2020, DJ Drake and MC Choco have maintained a collaborative partnership that started in DJ Drake’s living room during the Covid-19 pandemic. Their Facebook “Live” shows entertained thousands of viewers from the across the country, giving audiences a real time ability to connect with the artists and other fans during a time of isolation. 

With over three decades of DJing experience, DJ Drake currently works as a mix show DJ for 105.7 KISS FM in Richmond. MC Choco has an equally extensive background, having worked in local clubs and restaurants for over three decades.

The stables at Colonial Downs Racetrack are now filling with thoroughbred horses that will compete over ten weeks of racing each Wednesday through Saturday from July 9 to September 13. More than 200 horses have already arrived, with approximately 800 horses expected to stable at the track during race season. Daily training has also commenced, with top tier racehorses, trainers, and jockeys putting in work on Colonial Downs’ dirt track and its world class Secretariat Turf Course.

“With just one week to racing, the stables are filling and the track is coming to life as some of the nation’s top horses, trainers, and jockeys getting ready for Colonial Downs’ biggest season to date,” said Frank Hopf, Senior Director of Racing Operations at Colonial Downs. “With family friendly activities, great food and beverage specials, and high stakes racing, Colonial Downs is ready to welcome new and returning fans to Virginia’s premier thoroughbred racetrack to experience the excitement of live racing all summer long.”

In 2025, Colonial Downs hosts a 44-day live racing season. This will be a record number of race days since the track reopened in 2019 and is an increase of 17 race days over the 2024 schedule. The summer 2025 stakes program, highlighted by a quartet of graded races, includes 31 races worth a total of $5.85 million.

The 2025 season began with an historic three-day March meet in which a sold-out crowd of 8,000 fans watched the Virginia Derby serve as the state’s first-ever Kentucky Derby qualifier race.

Steeplechase horse racing, a spectacular Virginia tradition and a fan favorite, will be a regular feature at Colonial Downs nearly every Thursday beginning at 10:45 AM.

FREE general admission will be offered nearly every race day, with General Admission for four Premium Racing Events available at the fan-friendly price of just $5 and free general admission for children five and under. For an elevated guest experience on any race day, Colonial Downs offers reserved Grandstand Seats and Grandstand Box Seats, as well as indoor seating and dining options at the Jockey Club and the 1609 Restaurant.

The 2025 Premium Racing Events that will require a ticket include:

In 2019, Colonial Downs Racetrack in New Kent County re-opened after a five year closure, along with the first Rosie’s Gaming Emporium which provides additional resources to support worldclass racing, Virginia’s $2 billion equine industry, and the local communities in which Rosie’s now operate.

Since 2019, Rosie’s Gaming Emporiums have allowed live race days at Colonial Downs Racetrack to increase from fifteen to forty-four, while average daily purses at Virginia’s premiere thoroughbred racetrack have risen to nearly $700,000. Rosie’s have now opened in New Kent, Richmond, Hampton, Vinton, Collinsville, and Emporia, along with The Rose Gaming Resort in Dumfries, funding competitive purses that attract racing talent to Virginia, employing 1,700 team members, and generating tens of millions in state and local tax revenue. 

Earlier this year, Colonial Downs hosted the Commonwealth’s first Kentucky Derby qualifying race—the 2025 Virginia Derby—which was held before a sell-out crowd at Colonial Downs Racetrack on March 15, 2025. The track also hosts multiple “graded stakes races,” considered the highest level of competition in racing, including the Arlington Million, Beverly D, Secretariat Stakes, and Old Dominion Derby.

The Colonial Downs summer racing season will begin Wednesday, July 9 with live racing every Wednesday through Saturday until Saturday, September 16 and a special day of Monday racing on Labor Day.

Over the years, it has grown to be one of the Mid-Atlantic’s largest street festivals as thousands visit historic Jackson Ward to reminisce about the days when 2nd Street was the heart and soul of Richmond’s African American community and was known as “the Harlem of the South.” Today, Jackson Ward continues to be a thriving neighborhood and community.

Today, Comcast announced the 100 businesses in Richmond that will receive comprehensive grant packages, which include business consultation services, educational resources, a $5,000 monetary grant, creative production, media schedule, and a technology makeover. The recipients are among more than 14,000 entrepreneurs nationwide, and 188 small businesses in Richmond, who have been selected through the Comcast RISE program to date. Comcast RISE is committed to supporting the growth of all small businesses, while advancing the objectives of diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as community investment. The program was created to help businesses and their communities thrive, with a focus on economic growth.

Dewberry, a privately held professional services firm, has announced it has been selected by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide logistics planning and construction services under the Logistics Management Directorate (LMD). LMD provides logistics capabilities to procure and deliver goods and services that support disaster planning, response, and recovery operations for disaster survivors and communities for all states and territories inside and outside of the continental U.S.

Dewberry was awarded an indefinite-delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract valued at $810 million with a five-and-a-half-year period of performance. The contract supports a broad range of professional services, including direct housing activities, permanent housing construction, and emergency management functions by providing emergency management planning, construction planning and management, project management, quality control, technical analyses, and administration services. Major elements of the contract also include housing mission planning, supply chain analysis, and life cycle process management system support.

$150,000 in donations given to organizations across eight countries

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. – Twelve nonprofit organizations in eight countries have been selected to receive financial contributions from regional groups and other member-led groups and initiatives of the CompTIA Community, the membership arm of CompTIA, the technology industry’s leading association.

A total of $150,000 was awarded to charities in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Malaysia, Belgium, Indonesia and the Netherlands. CompTIA Community regional groups and industry advisory councils have supported more than 70 organizations around the world with approximately $1.5 million in charitable giving over the past 12 years.

“This year’s group of charities truly show how technology can be used to create abundant opportunities for future success in today’s digital world,” said MJ Shoer, chief community officer, CompTIA. “Each organization has its own unique mission making positive impacts in their local communities and across the globe. This significant growth allows for more than 450 people to live under the CARITAS umbrella on any given day. Residents in the shelter and The Healing Place receive 3 meals a day and a snack without cost to them. Providing this quantity of food on a daily basis requires a coordinated effort between full-time kitchen staff, corporate partners, and hundreds of community volunteers.

In October 2023, CARITAS hosted a breakfast for nonprofit members of ChamberRVA. One attendee was Raymond LeBlanc, Community Engagement Manager for Mercy Chefs. Mercy Chefs had recently stood up operations for a community kitchen in the Richmond area. Raymond met CARITAS Senior Operations Director Paul Start and began discussing a partnership between the two nonprofits. In December, Mercy Chefs began providing lunches each weekday to the residents of the CARITAS Center at 2220 Stockton Street. In January, they added the men’s campus at 700 Dinwiddie Avenue. Mercy Chefs now provides 300 meals each weekday across the two campuses. Hear more in our interview with Raymond, Paul, and Managing Chef MarBeth on our YouTube channel.

In addition to this incredible support from Mercy Chefs, CARITAS receives significant food donations from FeedMore, Walmart, Target, Publix, Save A Lot, Ukrops, University of Richmond, Yellow Umbrella, Altria, and the Humanities Foundation. These corporate partners donate nearly 163,000 pounds of food each year to keep the CARITAS pantries stocked. CARITAS also receives meal donations each week from congregational partners, companies, families, and neighborhood groups interested in feeding their residents. The boat tours travel along downtown Richmond’s historic Canal Walk and review centuries of Richmond’s history, from Powhatan’s Chiefdom to the first commercially successful electric streetcar in the world, all while traveling in authentically styled boats. Visitors will see the unique railroad Triple Crossing, tobacco warehouses that have been converted into trendy lofts, the Virginia Capital Trail, the Low Line gardens and James River wildlife. 

Tours depart on the hour from the canal’s Turning Basin at 139 Virginia Street, in Downtown Richmond. Boats can accommodate up to 25 passengers and are accessible to those with physical disabilities. Tickets are sold on a first come, first served basis at the Turning Basin’s ticket kiosk, and online up to 18 hours in advance. 

Canal Cruise private charters are also available as one- or two-hour private boat tours that are a favorite for family reunions, celebrating birthdays and engagements, corporate retreats, business groups, churches, clubs, and many more group outings.
