WIENER DOG RACES AND “CLAIMING CROWN SHOWCASE DAY” HIGHLIGHT HUGE WEEK AT COLONIAL DOWNS

The excitement and entertainment continues this week at Colonial Downs with the return of the always amazing Wiener Dog Races at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 23. This year’s field of sixty-four competing Wiener Dogs are ready to blast down the Colonial Downs dirt track as fast as their little legs will take them with the winning Wiener and their humans collecting a $1,000 cash prize. To celebrate this auspicious occasion, the world-famous Oscar Mayer Wienermobile will also be making a special appearance at Colonial Downs.

General Admission tickets for this can’t-miss competition are just $5 with children five and under free. Reserved, covered, and indoor seats are also available at www.ColonialDowns.com. Thoroughbred racing begins at 12:30 p.m. and the winning Wiener will be crowned around 3:15 p.m.

“We’re really proud of the worldclass thoroughbred racing program we’re building at Colonial Downs, but there’s nothing quite like seeing a whole pack of Wiener Dogs barreling down the track,” said Frank Hopf. “This is always a family-friendly day at the track and a whole lot of fun for all of us at Colonial Downs. We’re expecting a few thousand fans so get your tickets today!”

Only competing pups will be allowed into the track on Saturday and, of course, there will not be any wagering on these fun and family-friendly races.

In addition to cheering on these miniature speed demons, Colonial Downs will feature exciting thoroughbred horseracing Wednesday through Saturday. Thursday will be a Showcase Day for horses in the national “Claiming Crown” competition featuring the horses that are the real heart and soul of the sport competing for a spot in November’s Claiming Crown Championship at Churchill Downs Racetrack.

Live thoroughbred racing continues every Wednesday through Saturday until September 13 with a special Labor Day race card on Monday, September 1. The season’s final Premium Racing Event will be Old Dominion Derby Day on Saturday, September 6 highlighted by the Grade 3 Old Dominion Derby.
